And Happy Boxing Day!

I know it is still Christmas in Canada, so we want to say to all of you: Merry Christmas, and may your Year of Grace merge into a Year of Grace-Giving! Isn't that the point? God so loved so he gave, and we in turn so love that we give. Munch on this for a while, along with your turkey and cranberries:

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38).

We miss you very much, and trust that our paths will cross again soon. New Zealand has been very good for us, and tomorrow we begin a tour around the country. Danny reminded us this morning to ask God each day to give us a vision of the people we should meet and places we should go. Please pray along with us toward that end.

Merry Christmas!

Kaleo family,

Very Merry Christmas to you and your families! I heard a sermon at Ethos (a young adults service in Coquitlam) that basically said that Christmas is a celebration of the curtain rising on the greatest love story ever told. It really stuck with me. Immanuel, God with us. God made his dwelling with us and one day soon, we will dwell with him in heaven. And one day, we will celebrate together once more as a Kaleo family! What a joyous day that will be!

I love you all!

Holly

PS Jocelyne, we're praying for your mom! Love you lots!

Hey everyone,

So I'm not sure how many people still follow this blog, but wanted to write a quick post to ask those of you who still do to pray for my mom. Thursday she was experiencing really bad chest pain so we took her to the emergency and they did a whole bunch of different tests on her. She apparently did not have a heart attack, but was very close to it so they are keeping her in the hospital and running more tests on her. We really don't have any idea whats happening and the doctors haven't given us much information, but they are planning to fly her to Calgary next week to get an angiogram done. They have obviously detected something because they wont let her come home but I don't think even the doctors really know whats going on. I have all of my finals this coming week, none of which are easy classes and I'm super stressed with studying for exams and having this happen with my mom (especially since no one is giving us any information). Hopefully it isn't anything too serious but I figured the more people praying the better. Hope everyone is doing well, miss you all!

Say A Little Prayer for Me

Hey everyone!
Well I do miss you guys and I wish I could see all of your faces, hopefully I do get to see some of them soon! Anyways, I think I need some prayer. There is so much going on that I really don't know what to do with myself. I have realized just how much of a selfish and inward centered person (versus outward focused), so please just be praying that I would become selfless. Something along those lines is that I have feelings for a certain guy and I am pretty positive he does not return those feelings, and it is really hard because we are around each other a fair bit, so pray that the Lord would settle my heart and make me content of where I am, and I would just see this guy as a brother. Another thing is that RU is time consuming and because of that, I hang out with the RU people a lot even outside of practice time etc (especially when I am eating in the cafe)., because I have gotten to know them the best. I love this ministry and I love dancing but I am really frustrated and I feel trapped or labelled. I want to escape this, and since I am shy it is even harder to get to know other people. So be praying that I can get to know people outside of RU. Ya, that was a lot but I think I do need some prayer. Plus this weekend B-crest puts on a Christmas production that are two hours each and there is 4 performances this weekend and RU is performing in it. I have two large assignments due on Tuesday and Monday and I really don't have time to do them! Also, be praying for the people who will be coming to see this concert and that it would be impacting.
Love you guys and I would love to hear from you!

update

Hi family. I can't believe how much time has gone by since Kaleo ended. I wish we could have a chapel or something again just to be together. I've wanted to post on here for a while, but have been reluctant too. With things not going well I find it hard to write about whats going on honestly. I wish I could tell about crazy adventures and what not. I guess I haven't wrote anything on here is because i'm scared too. As weird as that sounds. Alright I'll just go for it and if doesn't make sense well at least I got the courage to write whats been happening. Being at home has been a struggle. Being away for a year and a bit and coming back into life at home was a lot different than what I expected it to be. Theres a lot of things I know I could have done but didn't. I have no community here and it's been rough. I don't really know whats going on or really what to think anymore. I've put myself into a box and I'm finding it hard to get out of. I feel trapped and stuck. I worry way more than my own good and I think I have anxiety. The only time I feel at peace is when I'm asleep. I've been doubting in faith as well. It feels as though I forget what I learned in Kaleo. Coming back people just ask me now what and its frustrating. I've been going through a season of frustration and bitterness. I just feel judged all the time. I'm so lost with my future and I know I shouldn't worry and put it in God's hands but its a lot easier said than done. I guess I have forgotten to give everything to God. I'm just super stressed out. I need some prayer right now. There has been a lot of good in the time I've been back. But I feel it gets outweighed by my fears and worries. I've been able to see family so thats been good. I love them a lot but I feel that they don't even know me and then i feel like i'm being judged and i hate it. Hmm. My pastor gave me a book to read called the north face of God and it takes our spiritual journey and uses the image of climbing a mountain to relate to it. I feel as though I have staggered off the path. Meeting with him has been helpful. We talked about social justice and mission trips and it got me excited to talk about that. And because of that Briercrest has been in the back of my mind so I got in contact with them and I'm pretty sure (not 100% sure yet) I'll be heading there in january for the global studies program. It's not the place where i thought i would be going and i'm still so unsure but I think its a big step of faith in trusting God that He will take care of me. It's taken a lot of thinking and deciding so don't laugh at me haha. Briercrest friends you better show me the ropes. i'm counting on you. Well I really don't want to post this but I'm going to. I know its not that long or what not but it feels like weight has been lifted off in posting this. So take it as it is. But really I just want to ask for prayer. here's a lame joke to end on a good note. Where did Noah keep the bee's? In the archives!

update

so i went to emergency and they did a minor procedure there. i am much better now. in almost no pain, praise the Lord. after almost 2 weeks of near constant pain, this feels incredible. umm, still have to meet with a surgeon on december 9th and get a surgery date. not done this journey yet, but way more comfortable for the ride!

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

hey family.

okay, so i'm just gonna jump in. remember theology of mission and mount washington (the first time) and how i was on the couch all day, err day? well, the same problem is back except bigger and better. and by better, i mean worse. i've been to one class in two weeks cause i can't be on a couch there on my stomach and any other position is uncomfortable at best, unbearable at worst. i've been on antibiotics for the last ten days and while they have brought the infection down, they have not eradicated it and have left me nauseous for the past few days. as a result, it's been decided that i'm going to emergency tomorrow to have a hospital take a look and see if they can do something. i'm also scheduled to meet with a surgeon on december 9th.

it's really taken a toll on me and i am frustrated. i want to be able to walk and sit and stand comfortably. a lot of times, i have quite literally forgotten what comfortable is. the worst part is remembering that last time, i had all of you around me and this time you're not here.

God's heard a lot of whining and pleading from me these past few days but despite many many prayers that this would be taken away, He has not seen fit to remove this affliction. i'm trying to praise Him in the storm but it's hard.

so if you all could pray that surgery wouldn't be a far off thing and that this problem would be dealt with once and for all, that would be awesome. also pray for a minimum of pain in the next few days.

thanks guys.

Catch Us If You Can!

We have seen many of you in the past while, but many we haven't, so I thought it was time for a post. In the past couple of months, we have traveled from Nova Scotia to Victoria, and down to California and back again. If you would like to read about our experiences, you can do so at my personal blog, at http://jimbadke.blogspot.com. It was a good journey, especially as it became a tour of students with a little sight-seeing thrown in. The highlight was definitely visiting with about 90 Kaleo students from all the years, many of whom we have not seen in a long time. We are sorry to have missed seeing the rest of you, and hope that happens soon!

We are back in Victoria, house-sitting and anticipating what God has next for us. To this point, we have no idea what we will be doing after these next few weeks. Mostly, that has been okay, with moments of panic tossed in, and really it has been the story of these past few months. At one point, I think someplace in Ontario, I was sitting in church and the question flashed up on the powerpoint, "What does God want you to do?" So I threw that up to him and said, "Okay God, what do you want me to do?" The answer came back immediately and clearly: "I want you to travel across Canada and visit students." "But God," I said, "that's what I'm doing!" He said, "Exactly."

Waiting on God is not very comfortable, but it is good.

Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:30, 31 ESV).

So, youths and young men, watch out - here we come! Expect us to fly, run or walk by you sometime soon! I am glad that we have not been just waiting around, but God has always given us significant things to do, in anticipation of what he has for us next. Someone was praying for me recently, and he said I should focus more on what God is doing, and not on what he is not doing. So, what is God doing?

Since our return to Victoria he has given us people to visit and experience mutual encouragement with; he has given us a great little church to fellowship with and to witness what he is doing there; and he has given me words to write.

Yes, I am living up to the name you gave me and I am being a Scribe! As well as daily communications and my own blog, I have been writing what may become a book someday, averaging about 1000 words a day. I guess I am about a third of the way through, and that is all I am going to tell you for now!

So, we will appreciate your prayers and we LOVE hearing from you! We will be sure to update you about where God directs us. Love and miss you all!

Fun times!

Hey Everyone, I realize I've been posting lotsa stuff lately, whether it be me or other people on my computer (cough) but I wanted to let everyone know that I had my surgery for my Hernia yesterday, and while I'm quite sore, I am thankful for the gift of strong pain killers! I also think that more people should post on here. It doesn't have to be an update every couple of months, this blog is here so that we can be chatting together! It's definitely a good way to share our good times and bad times as we go through life, and most of us still check this blog lots. I love hearing from you guys, whether it's tough stuff, or you're at the top of the world, and I know I'm definitely not the only one: so talk!

B-crest Update

I would like to say that Lynnea is probably the best girl ever! She is so kind, hospitable, and is practically a genius. That is all. Oh ya, I like wearing make-up too which you will be able to see from my new facebook photos.

hello my dear ones.

I'm sitting in a coffee shop in ancaster away from my school because I'm a fool and I make mistakes and I'm ashamed to be there right now.

Redeemer is one of the best choices I've ever made, apart from Kaleo. Its a safe place with rules and stuff but not enough to make you feel like you're in prison. Thats what I like about it. This past month or so going to school there has been great. I've had solid conversations and I've met incredible people.

Yesterday was a rough day though. I cut in half my antidepressant dose a week and a bit ago on my doctor's advice. I really thought that I was fine but yesterday I was a mess. I was mad at everyone and then I went for a walk and cried by myself on a saturday night (super lame). I hadn't cried in ages (apart for when jim came to visit... I cried like a baby when he left). My antidepressants kind of make me unable to cry... It drives me crazy. So when I cry its usually a big deal. So I was grumpy and angry and in tears and I decided to go get a piercing. When I came back I was still feeling awful. I literally walked through a ditch and cried for like an hour until my friend came and found me... Then I went home and thought it would be a great idea to drink my troubles away. I have no idea how much I drank but it was a lot. I don't remember the rest of the night except for a few moments at some party and then puking in a bucket at my house. Redeemer is a dry campus and so now I have to pay a 100 dollar fine. I'm embarrassed and I feel like a fool. My house mates don't know anything about my life because they all have a really fluffy outlook on life and I feel like they wouldn't understand anything. There is no way I can tell them that I put makeup on my arm everyday to hide the fact that I carved the word fat into my skin. I can't tell them that I don't know how to feed myself. I can't tell them that I'm dizzy and tired all the time cause I don't know how to eat. I can't tell them that I have no self respect and I don't value myself whatsoever. I can't tell them that I'm on antidepressants and that me drinking last night wasn't just me being a stupid teenager but really it was all I could do cause I had no one to go to. I can't tell them that I don't like living with them and that I feel judged 24/7. I can't tell them that I'm currently sitting in a coffee shop crying and writing my feelings on a blog that I'm not sure anybody even reads.

I'm sorry that this post makes no sense. I'm sorry I'm a mess. I don't even know what I wanted to accomplish by writing this...

I guess I just want to say how grateful I am for the year we had together. A year of grace.

grace is what I need right now. and prayer and love and support.

The Mothership

Hey Everyone! It's everybody's possibly favorite friend named Logan! Just figured I'd let everyone know how life is going at b-crest here. It's going well. That's all.

No, in actuallity it is going really great though. All of us here have been staying in better contact than I had expected, and the past Kaleo's have also made an effort to get to know us, which is sweet. We've all been doing different things while here, Erik, Heidi, and I have been playing some ultimate frisbee, Meghan's been doing lotsa basketball, Lynnea is on RU (Refined Undignified, a sweet dance team), and Michael joined the Briercrest skydiving team! I made the last one up, but that would be sweet. If you'd like to find out more, then talk to them! I'm gonna continue on about myself.

I've been taking some really good courses this semester, such as History of Christianity, English (it's alright), Foundations of Youth Min, Intro to Greek (Really good, but it may be the death of me, there's so much to learn!)(I can probably read your arm now Bret), and last is Pauline Epistles, a really great course. I've been learning and trying to apply lots of stuff to my life while I've been here, though it's really not easy. I've been realizing how important is to bear good fruit, as well as the importance of community here. I have been feeling myself going through bouts of remembering the purpose that I have here, but with discipline this is something that can be worked through.

Last of all I want to thank you all for everything that you guys taught me last year about myself and God. It was by no means a perfect year, but I often see it as the best year of my life. I miss you and am very grateful for the people that all of you are.

Your brother,
Logan

Frands, update on saraii

To update you all on my life. I finished a summer at Qwanoes and a season where different foreigners where staying at my house for weeks following this and I found myself tired of people and faking it all. I just needed rest after Kaleo and everything! Ahhh!

Now, the Aussies and Kiwis are gone and I am starting to be obsessed with going to the gym and health and got a job at HMV. My first shift is today. I honestly wish I was back in school studying the bible and changing the world and studying cultures but I am stuck and I hate here, I got this job but don't know how because I never keep up with the media. I hope I can make a difference there.

I was praying for direction right after summer because so often I considering leaving and traveling this year and I heard "one year" in my heart. I am thinking that my family needs me, especially my younger twin brothers who both have girlfriends(pray for their purity) for this year, I need your prayers to stick this one out. You all know how much of a flake I am.

I am so done with life at times, and I don't know why God has kept me alive for this long.

Mostly, I am dreading this year but pray that I find myself delighting in the Lord and this season of work I have to do. I am now starting to work with Youth For Christ spending time with homeless youth in my city on Wednesday nights- this is the only thing I look forward to within my week. Pray that God uses me there.

I am so envious of people who go to TWU and there parents pay for everything... I wish I wish I wish :(

My church is nice, I considered becoming a youth leader but found my heart wasn't in it for the girls who are so immersed in culture as well as I didn't have enough time with work, I need a group of Christians that are devoted to the Lord. My brother and his wife are pretty devoted to being with my sister(which is great!) so I don't have them most of the time. Please pray that I find Christian community, I am so tired of doing this alone. Pray that I have grace with my sister who I am thinking is very legalistic and still finding her way in her faith, she tends to hurt my feelings a lot.

Kaleo's I miss you all and pray that you are falling deeper in love with God, even if it is through hardship like me.

I wish I was serving the widows, poor, oppressed, healing the blind in India or Africa, my heart hurts for being overseas with the church that is not lukewarm but rather dying for their faith but I am here and am blessed with a big pretty house now(i am unworthy) and striving for desperation for Jesus.

JUST LOVE ME!!(prayers puleaase)

I love you all, family!

one year later...

It's been a year; how crazy is that? It boggles my mind to think that a year ago today, 26 of us descended upon camp to begin an intense journey that none of us were really prepared for. Along the way, we became a group of 21, yet God made that good. It was a good year. Maybe not good in the way we expected but good because God made it good.

So where are you now? I want to know!

I'll start us off: I'm currently sitting in the Student Union Building (SUB) at UBC Vancouver. I am still living in Surrey, so I'm commuting an hour and a half each way (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter; today was about an hour forty). However, I love UBC. I love being in university, I love the size, I just love the vibe here. I'll probably move onto campus next year though cause four years of the commute seems a little ridiculous to me.

I'm also working at Starbucks as a barista, a job which I have wanted since I was 16. Now I'm realizing it isn't as cool as I thought, but I still love that as well. It's definitely a learning curve, but not one I can't handle. Honestly, learning Starbucks drinks is harder than school right now!

I'm youth leading at my church for grade 9 girls. I am one of two leaders for this age group and my co-leader is such a great person. I've known her for a while but now I have the chance to know her better which I'm stoked on! As well, I have plugged into a Bible study here at home which a lot of the youth leaders go to and I love it. There is a solid community there.

So yeah, that's pretty much life right now. I was scared coming into the fall because my closest friend moved away but I am strengthening other friendships and have a sweet cell phone plan so I can talk to my bestie anytime I want! All in all, I think this year will be grand!

Love you all. Miss you all.

Hola Amigos!

Hello my fam-jam!
I know I update a lot but you know what? I really don't care. So I have made my way to B-crest, and I was accepted into the TESOL program but.... I just felt so unsettled about it, even to the point of crying. So I talked to my program head so he suggested Global Studies to me, which is similar but a more wide array of different ministry opportunities (TESOL is very focused). And guess who my program head is meow. Tim Stabell! So I am quick happy and feel so at peace about it. It has been crazy trying to figure out classes but I is kind of crazy sometimes when you trust in the Lord I guess, haha.
I other news, I made the Briercrest Refined/Undignified team (the dance crew)! It all happened so suddenly to be honest. I am really excited for the ministry opportunity but yet nervous. The RU team reminds me a lot of Kaleo. It is a family-like community, we are supposed to be transparent with each other, support one another and do ministry together. I also think it will be challenging like Kaleo (maybe even more) and to be honest, the leader, Adrian reminds me of Jim a little! As much as I love Kaleo, I don't know if I could do another year of Kaleo. So I am scared in that aspect. So please be praying for me. We practice for 12 hours a week and are gone 4-6 weekends per semester. Also, if you would like to be an 'official' prayer partner for me, give me a heads up and your email so I can add you to the list.
Love you! And I would adore if I heard from you guys!

pray?

For the first time in a very long time I don't have the "one" person in my life to go to and vent and cry and always share my life's frustrations and joys with. I think this partly may be because I have been slowly needing less pouring into and am doing more of the pouring in. Or maybe I do have someone and just don't feel okay with going to that person. Regardless, I am struggling right now. So I'm gonna share here with you guys.

Because it's practical stuff, not so much psychological and all that, I would usually call my Dad or Mom in a situation like this and be like heeey, this is the situation, what do you suggest I do to fix it? The problem with that this time is I know their answer - quit. Quit basketball. Quit the TESOL program. And either come home or go into an easier program and don't play sports. I reeeeally don't want to quit. I'll tell you why in a minute.

Okay, here's the situation: I'm sick and fading, but I think it's partly, if not mostly, due to psychological stress. I've woken up every morning here in the wonderful land of Caronport feeling extremely nauseous. I have little to no appetite at all times. I've thrown up enough times. For the last two days I've had waves of nausea followed by waves of intense headache followed by a period of feeling completely fine. And this cycle has repeated constantly, beginning when I wake up in the morning. And class has been 8:30-5 every day, followed by homework and assignments, followed by making of meals and dishes, followed by 8-10 basketball practice. Typical, easy day, right? Maybe I'm just weaker than the rest of the human population. I'm still spending a very good chunk of my days in prayer and reading the Word. I've screamed out in frustration, had anxiety attacks/hyperventilation, passed out once - though I think that was mostly from physical exertion in practice. The headaches destroy me the most.

But I was called here. I know it. I KNOW I'm supposed to be here. And I KNOW I'm supposed to be playing ball. And I know that it is impossible on my own strength. I know I need to trust and rely on the powerful One and stop worrying and leave it up to his perfect plan and will. And I'M TRYING. But all that's seeming to result is me being an absolute tool in my daily interactions, almost seeking attention or something (I do desperately need it, but instead should rest in the truth of being covered in the LORD's love). And then worrying more about not being in shape, not being good enough, not making good impressions, not being present at any of my team's bonding activities this week, not using my food before it goes bad, not getting incredible marks in this class, not pouring into people, not being there for people at home...

Please pray for me. Or something. I know there are ten thousand (million) people out there that are in worse struggles than this. And most if not all of you definitely are going through worse. But I'm not sure what else to do or ask for. And I'm not sure what to do differently. I'm trying to learn what I'm supposed to learn from this. I'm trying to physically take care of myself. I'm trying not to give up. But giving up is basically second nature for me, if not first nature (not to ruin the expression). First it's basketball. Then it's school. Then it's relationships. Then it's God. Then it's life. I don't want to go down that path.

I Had Time For A Blog Post

Well this summer has been a very long one. I have had no time to do anything and anytime I have off I rush away from camp. I really have been enjoying working here, though im getting tired of being in the same place for a year. It is so sweet to teach all these kids to do what I love. They are all so stoked once they try everything and it is totally worth it to see their smiles.

It is the final week of camp and I look forward to going home. This summer I have learned so far, to rely on God's strength. I feel like I have not had an impact on kids because I am only there for activities. I know I must have an impact on them, but its just tough for me not to see any of the impact I have made. I`m going to be doing a devotion in one of the cabins this week for youth camp. Im stoked, but also a bit nervous because I haven`t really told my story to random kids before. I hope to speak into their lives and hope they are open and interested to hear what God has done in my life. If you could pray for me to have wisdom and an impact that would be awesome.
I feel like I have been distracted this summer by so much. Pray that this last week will be groundbreaking for me. I expect great things to happen. I long for God but I dont feel on fire anymore and I just feel so drained. It doesnt help that im sick right now. but thats no excuse. Please pray for energy and Joy.
I have so much to talk about and tell, but hardly any time too. I hope once I get home, and after I find rest, I'll be able to reflect on everything that has happened this year. I haven't even reflected on Kaleo. I love you guys a ton and I apologize for never being around.

Life..

Life really has a way of thrusting us on to paths we would never choose or even consider.

As a lot of you know, I had a bit of a hard transition back home after Kaleo. The beloved and gracious Jim and Sarah Badke opened their home for me to come and rest and start figure out where to take my next steps. I did a lot of things i’m not proud of. I hurt a lot of people, myself included. I was so deeply stuck in things that I didn’t even know how to begin to make better choices. But I knew there needed to be change, and I could not continue down the road I was on. So I applied for a program called Mercy Ministries in Surrey, BC. It’s a 6 month program for women age 19-27 to come and learn how to be set free from different things, and begin to live in the life that God intended. I heard about this program years ago, and when things would get bad I always thought about contacting them, but never seriously followed through with anything. But this time, I really had no idea where to go. I knew I needed to change, and I wanted change so badly, but I just couldn’t figure out how.

The application process is long. I started applying in the beginning of may, and didn’t even get accepted until July. Once you get accepted they put you on a wait list, and just pray and wait on the Lord’s timing for you to come. I went through the whole spectrum of being angry and impatient with the waiting and the uncertainty, to being relieved that I hadn’t heard from them. I was getting ready to build a life again in Victoria, and just starting to get a better grip on things. I applied for some jobs and stuff, but then a couple of days ago...Mercy called.

It’s really humbling to have all of this happening. This isn’t how I planned to spend my next year. This isn’t my first choice, but I’m starting to see that it is probably the right one.

You should look it up if you want to see more about Mercy. (www.mercyministries.ca).

It’s all happening so fast. I’m leaving on wednesday night, and I have no idea what to expect or how to feel. While i’m there I won’t have my cell phone, or internet at all, so no texting, facebook or email. I can get phone calls on saturdays. (604-535-1983). I’m kind of confused because on one form it said people can call from 1:30 to 5:30, and on another is said from 10 to 6.. I’m not really sure, so just call and i’m sure we’ll figure it out! AND I can send and get letters all the time!

I would LOVE to hear from you!! And I need to know your new address for this year so I can send you letters too! So send mail! Woooo!

It’s going to be a tough transition, and I know it’s going to be really lonely at first not knowing anyone, and not being able to call or text whenever I want. And there’s some pretty strict and crazy rules, so it’s going to be tough to learn how to submit. I know that this is a good place, and it’s good for me to go, but honestly, i’m really afraid.

So i would really appreciate prayer.

Love you guys with all my heart!

change of plans

dear family;

i know i have been fairly silent these past months. i haven't been seeing or talking to much of anybody. i am sorry if anyone has felt hurt or ignored by my actions; i know that some of you have e-mailed or tried to contact me and i have either taken eons to respond or haven't responded at all. it has just been a very difficult summer and it's hard to know what to say.

i guess first things first: i am no longer going to briercrest. i was denied my loan about a month ago and it was truly like being punched in the face. i had this stupid, cocky assurance that i would be there, no matter what, because "it was what god wanted." what do i know? my parents' income is far too much for the government to even consider loaning me ten thousand dollars. i had my period of mourning. i cried for a week, i didn't talk to anybody. my dad went behind my back and signed me up for classes at uvic, although i had expressed less than no interest in going there. i was offered a scholarship to pay for my first year though, and it killed my dad to see me pass that up. when i told him i hadn't gotten my loan, he told me it was good he has signed me up for classes at uvic then. "what???" i said. i had no idea he had secretly done this. is it just me or were his actions a bit strange and manipulative? anyway i changed my courses because he had signed me up for stuff he wanted me to take (history of WWII, intro to economics, etc). i'll be taking four classes, and chose some pretty cool ones. i'll also be working four shifts a week at the coffee shop in order to go away come next fall. unfortunately my scholarship from briercrest cannot be deferred and i had to forfeit it. we'll see if i can get it come next year.

i'm going to be jumping around a bit, so bear with me. here comes my rant on my current existential crisis.

it is very easy to live as if god does not exist. in little to no time (one week?), you actually start to believe that he doesn't. it seems plausible that god is a whimsical notion sad people invented to feel better. when you don't hear god's "voice," when you forget how to pray, when your christian friends are the ones who have hurt you most, this life seems a lot less appealing. i have tried for so long to do this life right, to read the word, to talk to the lord, to do his work. i am tired. i still don't know who he is. what's worse, sometimes i don't care. but, interestingly, i am the most unhappy i have ever been in my entire life. this is partly existential crisis, partly legitimate health reasons, on which i will soon elaborate. but the point is: why do we even try to do "good," when all the "good" we do is arguably always inherently selfish? why do we bother to do the things we don't want to do but do anyway because we know they are "right"? because if we don't, we'll probably feel worse about ourselves. right? because we'll know we failed, or "disobeyed," or whatever you want to call it. so what's the point? here we all are waltzing around life like we aren't really selfish, like this good-doing is so easy for us. but do we only do good because we are selfish? i'm starting to think so. i don't understand it. it makes me angry to see people doing good because i automatically assume it's for their own selfish gain. pretty sick of me, i know. everything around me i see is negative. i have these terrible lenses by which i view the world. i feel like a nihilist, like i've finally given up, because nothing has a point anyway.

so that's that.

i think a lot of this terrible frame of mind has been a result of the chronic pain i have been in for the past four months. starting the week before we left for india, i started having constant nausea. i didn't understand it; i assumed i was just nervous about the trip or something. i found it very hard to eat. when we landed in india was when relief finally came. it was very strange. however, upon return to camp, it happened again. i was feeling constantly so so so physically ill. again, i assumed i was anxious about leaving kaleo, or nervous about leading worship at grad, or just sad. i don't know. the point is, it never went away.

in addition to the chronic nausea, i have been having mild, though steady, internal bleeding, along with insomnia. i am constantly anxious and paranoid about all sorts of things. peace only comes when i take enough sleeping pills to knock me out, but because of this i wake up most mornings feeling hung over. i have been in and out of doctors, and tested for all sorts of diseases and allergies. we have discovered that i have some new allergies (sugar, wheat, dairy, yeast, grapes, cantaloupe), which has been somewhat helpful, but regardless of what i eat i am still in a lot of abdominal pain. one thing the doctors discovered is that i have really intense acid reflux which has eroded the lining on my stomach, so no matter what i put in it, it becomes irritated. i am on prescription medication for that, and a lot of vitamins and a strict diet for everything else. but still there is no relief. my body is always so tense, i am afraid to eat, i am afraid to fall asleep. i wake up with my jaw clenched so tight and my body in knots. i've been grinding my teeth and they're starting to change shape. i wake up nauseous and cannot eat before i go to work. i'm exhausted all day and then starving by four in the afternoon, but i'm too scared to eat much because i'd rather be hungry than nauseous again.

and so is the cycle of my days.

in addition to this, i have been diagnosed with moderate depression, and have been put on medication for that as well. my doctor thinks that my constant anxiety, paranoia, loneliness and self-disgust is clinical. i think it is too. my doctor asked me if i remembered the last time i felt joy. i thought hard and i couldn't remember. it was before kaleo ended. i think it may have been grad day. i walk around with this weight in my chest, this sadness i can't shake, this constant feeling that my presence is a burden to anyone and everyone, so i shut myself out. most mornings i wake up and cry. i don't know why anymore, i can't explain it. the things i used to love are a nuisance to me now; music, reading, seeing friends. it's so hard to wake up in the morning. my good days are when i feel apathy as opposed to despair, and hunger instead of pain. the medication will take at least another month to kick in, so i have a while to go yet.

to manage the pain i had been smoking marijuana nearly daily. it numbed the nausea and made the day pass by quicker. however, as it is a depressant, my doctor told me i had to stop because in the long run it will make me feel worse. this is hard for me - i have to choose between feeling physically ill (when not smoking) and mentally ill (when smoking - whenever i come down from a high, it is true that i am sadder than i was before). still i think i would rather be sadder and in no physical pain than sad and in physical pain. the marijuana got rid of at least some of what i was feeling. in recent weeks i have quit though.

i need intercession right now. i don't want to give up on the truth. i am just at a loss as to how to beg god for relief anymore. i have spent months begging.

i want to be the woman people have told me they know i can be. a strong leader, a spiritual leader. someone who knows how to love, someone who knows how to lay down her life and offer it for the joy of others. someone who loves god so, so much. but the reality is that i am blinded by my own selfishness and pain and i am too weak to even be able to imagine i have any potential at all. i so badly want to know how to love people well. but i just don't. and i don't know who god is, i am so confused regarding his existence, his reality seems too good to be true. it does seem made up. it's so hard to see him when you are just in pain, in every sense of the word, all the time.

both my doctor and i think that most of my chronic pain is emotional and caused by anxiety, stress, and depression. i need to learn how to heal the anxieties in my brain, alleviate the weight of the sadness in my body. i don't remember what makes me happy anymore, though. so i don't know how to go about this.

i don't even know if anyone reads this blog anymore, but i don't know who to talk to, and it gives me some comfort to think that maybe someone is reading this and knows.

all i can really ask for is prayer.

to the briercrest crew - take full advantage of what is going to be available to you this year. the people, the opportunities, the resources. you are so, so lucky. and you all deserve this chance.

to everyone else - i think of you all the time. although i do not miss kaleo (it was such a hard year, i doubt anyone really misses it), i miss your presence. i miss working alongside one another for something far beyond us.

please pray.

love,

b

Jim & Sarah on Tour at a Town Near You!

A week from today, Sarah and I leave on a tour of Canada! We would love to see as many of you as we can manage, though of course we can't get to every community where you will be.

Here is what would be helpful: If you live in a place where a number of students could come for an evening or weekend afternoon, maybe you could arrange something and let us know, and you/we could invite people there from any of the years of Kaleo.

It would also be helpful - and especially fun - if you would be willing to let us park the truck (with a camper on it) in your driveway for a night or two. We are otherwise pretty self-contained.

We have no set schedule, but here is an idea of where we will be and when:
  • August 24 - arrive in Halifax, Cape Breton, PEI, maybe Newfoundland
  • Early September - New Brunswick
  • After Labour Day - Ontario
  • Mid/late September - Winnipeg, Caronport
  • Late September/early October - Edmonton, Calgary
  • Early/mid October - BC
  • Mid October - back to Victoria
You can text, FB or email us even while we are on the road. In the words of Paul, we "long to see you so that [we] may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—that is, that you and [we] may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith." See you soon!

Hey guys, hope the summer has been going wonderfully for everyone! Mine has been just dandy so far :) I received my yearbook on Monday, and had a great time looking over all our experiences and telling my family about the the year, and it made me miss you all a bunch, but also pumped me up for Briercrest once again!
In other news, four days after I had whined about my job on the rigs I was offered another job at church doing roofing, so I've been working for an awesome Christian guy for three weeks now, and I'm loving it. The work is pretty hot and hard, but Markus (My boss) is really laid back and funny, and I'm getting a pretty sick farmers tan in the mean time ;)
Last I'd like to ask for some prayers. Since the middle of hermeneutics I have had a lump at the bottom of my abdomen which slowly grew throughout the year. I finally went to have it checked out by a doctor on Monday, and she told me that I have a hernia, which is basically a split in my abdominal wall causing my bladder to poke through. Fortunately it's not a life threatening thing, unless my muscles try to close up and squeeze it off, causing an infection. Unfortunately I'll have to go in for surgery sometime during my time at Briercrest. Although I've had my worries, for the most part I have recieved peace about it.
Anyways, I am excited to hear the great news of what is happening with the Moravian school, and I would like to hear a lot more of what is happening in everyone else's lives too!
Miss you all!
Your brother in Christ,
Logan
P.S. My sister and mom are on a mission trip in Mexico right now with Caravan Ministries, is that the one that Jay's father in law is with?

To Team India

Hey, I hope you don't mind if I just pass on a few words to Team India, and the other teams may be interested as well. First, our wonderful guide and leader N. and his wife will be on the Island next week, after the 15th, and is wondering who might be available to get together and when. Please let me know if you will be around and what times would work best for you.

Second, I want to remind you again of the opportunity to continue our involvement by helping send three children to the Moravian School for this school term. The funds need to be in by September, and the children are the oldest son and daughter of J. from Os. and their cousin. Kids going to school has been one of the best ways of drawing families to faith, and you can be part of it! Even if you can only contribute a small amount, it would help. If you would like to do so, please contact me. Those who have already contacted me, I will send you info soon on how to make your contribution.

Finally, there are a few people interested in a Kaleo Alumni trip in late April / early May of 2012. If you would like to be added to the list of those interested, please again, contact me and I will send you information.

Whether you went to India or any other place, please consider how you can continue to be a blessing and support to that ministry through your prayers, encouragement and giving!

Yearbooks Should Arrive By Today

Your yearbooks should arrive today, if they haven't already! A number of them say on the tracking website: "Attempted delivery. Notice card left indicating where item can be picked up." Or they are at your post office, or are being delivered today. Please let me know if yours doesn't show up!

I believe the ones going to the camp also should arrive today, and I will pick up the ones for the Duncan and Victoria crew (including yours, Kristine - sorry, wasn't sure how long it would take! And yours, Holly - I thought you would still be at camp). So if you want your yearbook, you are just going to have to get together with me! Sorry, but it's true. Enjoy the memories!

Hello lovelies!

Hey there my K-fam. Oh how I miss you! I have been fortunate to speak with some of you and even hang out with a few but there are others I haven't heard from since that last day of Kaleo some 3 1/2 months ago! Hence the update...

Hmm where to begin...after Kaleo I took 3 months off...and that was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I started working when I was a wee lass in the 8th grade and have been working ever since, so this time has been incredible! God knew what was going to happen this past year and specifically for me he knew I needed rest. He provided Tine's place for me to housesit/stay at for about 2 months. And what provision that was. Tine and her family are SO generous as you know and so I was completely taken care of. I didn't need to do much, but I had just enough responsibility in taking care of the plants, cat, and pups (whom I actually kind of like now). I slept a lot and read tons, and watched many movies, and slooooowly made my way outside. Meghan, Bret, Anna, Lauren, and Nicki, Jim and Sarah(and their families) were around to have quality hangs with.

And in all of this the Lord taught me to slow down. He taught me to be as prayerful in the everyday moments and conversations, as I was learning to be in Kaleo. He showed me his wisdom in placing me in a city where I only knew a few people, because I needed to primarly be with Him in that time. He showed me his love through the few people I did see, and his creativity through his incredible creation right in Tine's backyard and city. Oh what an wonderful Father we have!

He also gave me much time to think about all of you. To read your blogs as I worked on the yearbook, and reflect on what happened. What an outstanding bunch of people you are! I can't even imagine what it would be like if I hadn't met you, so thank you. Thank you for being you and allowing me to get to know you.

I'm still thinking and praying about decisions for the fall. I am registered at the university in Abbotsford (where I am working right now) and Camosun in Victoria. I've got a years worth of prereqs to finish, and I'm applying for the Nutrition/Dietetics program at UBC in January! I would appreciate your prayers, because I want to be walking in faith and obedience.

Love ya all and please give me a ring-ring sometime:)

ps. I made the mistake of telling these 17-year boys at my work about my nickname and now they all call me janjan008

Yearbook On Its Way!

We have ordered your Yearbook! Most of you will simply receive it in the mail from Blurb.com, the company printing it. For those of you on the Island, the books will be delivered to you by hand. Please let me know when you get yours, or let me know if you still haven't received it by mid-August.

I hope you will find time to settle into a favorite spot with a cool tasty beverage (or hot one for those of us in the chilly West) and immerse yourself in the memories of this year. And I hope the Yearbook will encourage you to pray for one another, and that you will remember the grace of God that we experienced together. To him be the glory!

Luseland Bible Camp

A large portion of the LBC staff
Hello Kaleo family!
Even though I posted recently....very recently, I decided I don't even care, and I will again!
So.... camp ministry.

Two of my campers in my cabin during Kids week

It has been so crazy and wonderful beyond what I can express. God has been revealing himself so clearly to me through this last few weeks, and I am finally seeing the fruits of how God had worked through me during Kaleo. At Kaleo I was in a strange state, I have always been a leader at camp and at my school but at Kaleo......nothing. I was in a strange state that I cannot explain. But I think God was changing me from my core, and started some pruning, some re-molding and starting a few fires within my heart. Definitely not all of these things have come to completion but I think it was only until after Kaleo that some of these things were finished (if that makes sense at all). Going into camp ministry has made me realize what really has taken place during the year. I thank all of you so much for helping me get to the state I am in now.
God is good! Through the camp season he has given me selflessness (not perfect but way beyond my own ability), strength and energy, patience with all the medical stuff I deal with, and so much more. It is so hard to explain but all I can say is that it is all making sense now, and I can see how God has had his hand in my Kaleo year.
It has also been so wonderful to hang out with my Parakaleo, Kaitlyn Cey. She is doing such an incredible job at LBC. She is the program director at the camp I am working at so we have been able to hang out a lot. I am learning so much from her, and is just a great person to discuss stuff with. We have even planned to hang out at B-crest.... opa! Even though I knew her before Kaleo I am getting to know her on a whole different level. Anyways....
In other news, I went on my very first date....ever! I have 'dated' one person before but never went out on a date.... does that make sense? So that was pretty epic in my opinion. He was quite the gentleman, very funny, and he is four years older than me! He also mentored under Cal this past year. I felt so special, haha. Our interests are very opposite in many ways, and I am still questioning if that is alright or not. I am still praying for the Lord's leading on this though as I am unsure how all of this fits into His will for my life. So just thought I would share that exciting news with you.
Love you guys!
Lynnea

a Wide game called Armageddon

P.S. crazy story, apparently Wes Olmstead used to work at the same camp I am working at in the 80s! Sweet!

Yearbook is Coming!

Today, a single copy of the new Kaleo Eight Yearbook was shipped and should be here very soon. If that copy looks like it should, the rest will be ordered and should arrive in early August. If you are on the Island, we will get your copy to you, and the rest will be mailed. Thanks to the Yearbook Team and Tyler and Janet for all your work on this! We think it looks great, and hope it will bring back some amazing memories for you!

Miss you all! Thanks to those who have been in touch, and for the rest, we would love to hear from you!

Light at the End of the Tunnel

Hey guys! I have been following everyones blogs, and I'm excited to hear what God's been doing in everyone's lives, and as James writes, as we all are going through tests in our faith, we are developing perseverance, for God's glory. So my summer has had some mixed emotions tied in with it. Working on the rigs I figured was gonna be a pretty sweet gig, a bunch of hard work so that I could pay for B-Crest in September! However, While the work is alright, I have found myself feeling persecuted and alone at work. Sharing that I am a Christian at work has created a couple good conversations, but for the most part they just make fun of me for not wanting to have sex until I'm married. Anyways, I am finding it a much harder atmosphere to work in then I expected, as most of the conversations revolve around sex, and I'm having a hard time to relate to any of them. Secondly, I haven't recieved enough hours to cover school anyways, so I'm not sure how worth it this job was anyways. I feel like a whiner, because we are called to spread the gospel, and persecution comes with that. It just feels like almost everything lands on deaf ears. I guess it's been good practice for what a lighthouse does. The one exception to this is a Muslim man I have had some time to talk with, and though I havent been very bold in my speech, I hope to find another oppertunity to speak with him about God and Christ. I guess it is encouraging that I just have to shine, God does the hard work. Nevertheless, I am longing to escape soon! As the title says there is a light at the end of the tunnel, school is coming!
On a better note, They let me book a week off for camp, and didnt need me for another week, so I went to Faith Bible Camp, and was a Sr. Cabin leader for a junior high camp and support staff for the junior camp. This turned out to be a very encouraging time, as two of my boys gave their lives to Christ, and all of them seemed fairly engaged with the conversations. One night our devotion happened to be on forgiveness and grace, and what that is to us as a forgiven people, and it excited me to see it affect the guys thoughts a fair bit.
In other camp stories, I got my cabin to do the Raisin Bran skit, and everyone at camp loved it, said that it was definitely the funniest skit their was. Overall I had a great time, and it gave me some refreshing time to focus my mind on God without judgement or ridicule. besides all this though my summer hasn't been very eventful, and I find my thoughts often drifting back to everyone from Kaleo. My hopes and prayers are with you all, may God's will be yours!
Miss you all a ton,
Loges

I get knocked down, but I get up again

<---- Me in a ballin business suit. I'm growing up.

I'm no longer a teenager (and on that note, Mike isn't either). We're old.

Birthdays are a good time to reminisce. Last year this time I was at camp, planning on going back to CBC and in their Outdoor Leadership program, setting up my apartment and roommate for the year... my year looked nothing like I thought it would. I don't know about you guys but I am so thankful I did Kaleo. Yeah, I still feel sometimes like we were a failure of a Kaleo.. because it really seems like it when you look at things. But even if we were, I'm am sooo glad I was a part of it. We weren't expecting a year like that.. I can guarantee none of us were. We learned and we grew in unexpected (and some huge) ways. ALL OF US.

Now, since Kaleo and during Kaleo, I know many of you think you have gone backwards in life, personally. Guess what? I'm here to tell you right now that you haven't. We all fail but we're not failures. We all take steps back but have taken way more forward. How is that possible? Grace. Incredible. "The God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you." THAT is how we go forward.

I just had to fill out a medical history form for basketball next year.. and I needed more than triple the room they gave me in terms of the number of medical issues I had to elaborate on. It's sad. But the really sweet part - only like 4 of them I had labelled as current. Praise him. He is SO gracious, guys. To a supposed failure like me, and certainly to you.

Haha for the record, I labelled depression as a previous condition. I think that's true, but even if it isn't, it felt pretty sweet to write that :)

One more thing I have to mention since I have your attention and all here. I'm reading Mark Buchanan's Rest of God these days, alongside my psych text, and it is brilliant. I've never been the one to gush over Mark Buchanan but you all should read it. Seriously. Go buy it or borrow it or something (I'm borrowing it from my Pastor). And read your Bibles every day. That's worth MUCH more than a cheesy Qwanoes song, it changes your life.

Since I just love apologizing, I gotta say sorry for the mini-preach sesh.

Oh and update on Meghan Carr, the 20 year old: I'm going to bridal quest. My husband is waiting for me there, so I thought I better follow through on my committment to attending.

Life

Well I guess I will tell you how my life is going cause thats what all the cool kids are doing these days. To put it in short life right now is is pretty much the same thing everyday and every week is the same. A day for me will consist of getting up, working until dinner, come home, eat, relax, got to bed and then do it all over again. Suffice to say that I am happy with life right now but there are times that I wish there was more.

The biggest problem for me is loneliness. My relationship with my parents has never been better, but friends are far and few. But I am sure that a 15-year friendship with my best friend is over because he's not willing to put any effort into the friendship so after a while I can get the message. I am blessed with an amazing church and pastor who I will regularly have coffee with but during Sunday services I will usually sit by myself. I have come to terms with my loneliness and have accepted it, probably prefer it over company, I have become more introverted than ever and I don't mind it too much.

The most significant things in my life that have happened these past weeks is that God provided an amazing job for me with a great boss doing residential landscaping. I am pretty much getting an education from this guy as he willing to teach me the best way of doing things, teaching plants names and what conditions they do well in. It is exactly what I wanted in my job. I have a good wage and have consistent hours.  I had to quit my old job because it was just too draining on me and I had no life, that and the fact that they had to let me go because they were running out of work.

As well come the end of September I will be off to the Dominican Republic for a missions trip with my church! I don't know for sure whether or not I will be going because they still have to confirm time and expenses but I am 95% sure I will be going. Over there I will be building an add-on to a church as they have grown to the point of over-capicity and need additional seating for 200 people. I will be leaving at the end of September / beginning of October, which I believe is hurricane season over there...

Anyways i don't know who still checks this but thanks for taking the time to read this and hope to hear from you soon!!

Update

Hey guys
I never thought I would say it, but I love working at camp. It's a ton of work, but it such a great atmosphere for me. I have been growing so much and it's so sick that I get to occasionally see Bayus, Steve, and Sarah. I get to teach cute kids how to wakeboard while working on my tan. im stoked.
Im going through a lot right now and would love it if you could keep me in your prayers. I was also wondering if you could pray for one of my old friends back home. He overdosed and is now paralyzed. I wish I could be back home to be there, but thats not really a possibility. I dont know what state he is in as of now but if you could pray for him and his family that would be appreciated.

I'm in Argentina. Again.

I'm in Buenos Aires. So crazy, but oh so good to be back. I love this place. I love the friends I've made. I love the food. I love the family that I'm staying with (The Rendles). It's just great.

Honestly though, such a God thing to be back here. I remember sharing with you guys right before the end of Kaleo that I might be able to come back here and solely by the grace of God, I am back in this wonderful city. But it is very different than before. One: it's cold. Because we are below the Equator, it is currently winter here. So I got an extra 2 weeks of summer in March and now I have to give them back. Two: the teens we worked with the last time aren't here, for the most part. As international kids, they have gone back to home countries or are travelling. BUT! This has opened up sweet opportunities to connect with different teens. And I'm making new friends. =) As well, God has opened some sweet chances to have conversation with certain people and have them open up which is fantastic!! Third difference: different team. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish you guys were here! It's so weird experiencing Buenos Aires without you, Argentina Team!

But God is so good, Kaleo. He brought my support in over what I expected and in such a quick time span! And I'm back in this city with people that I love.

Please pray! My cysts are not bothering me but (i really wanted to say "pero" which is Spanish for "but"; I speak a little Spanglish now) I have a cough and headaches every day... But I'm loving Argentina!

Miss you all!!

Jordana serving at Qwanoes - so good!

Chilling on the Island

Like most of you, I check this blog practically every day, but haven't updated you much since we all parted on that tough Sunday in April. But I have loved reading about you and having the opportunity to see some of you in the past couple months, most recently at Holly and Heidi's homes. We have been to Ucluelet and to Kelowna, and now we are back on the Island, staying at a friend's farm near Duncan for Sarah's knee surgery on Tuesday and her recovery. We will be here until near the end of July and then likely will be in Victoria for a few weeks. Our plans are a little up in the air because it turns out that I may need surgery too, as my shoulder gets a little worse every day. But we still hope to fly to Halifax on August 23, where we will meet Kristine's mom and step-dad and take their truck and camper back across the country, arriving back in BC in early to mid-October.

How are we doing? It is hard to say. On the one hand, we are processing so much pain and loss right now that is is difficult to feel anything. Keeah was put down June 20, and the same day we took Barkley to stay with friends in Vernon until sometime this fall. Being in Kelowna was tough as I felt the loss of my dad, and my mom is very lonely and never wanted us to leave. It has also been strange to be back on the Island but not in our home, and we feel quite disconnected from everything familiar here. And for both of us, physical pain is an ever-present reality. So life continues to be hard.

But on the other hand, the grace of God just keeps rolling in, wave after wave. We enjoyed amazing weather in Ucluelet, while it was raining everywhere else, and our favorite beach that used to be an hour's hard hike now has a road right to it so Sarah could go. Our visits with Holly, Kristie and Heidi were so good and so encouraging, and Kristie's new home overlooking Okanagan Lake was a piece of heaven. God has freed us up from debt and made it possible for us to continue for some time without employment. On June 27th, Sarah and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary:

We have places to stay - for free - for months if we need them. For the first time in a very long while, we have time, but haven't become bored, even though Sarah can't walk much and walking is about the only thing I can do. I am reading Job, and with him I ask God how long the trouble will continue, but with him I can also say that God is good and can be trusted.

I want you to know that we love to hear from you! Please don't feel like you need to leave us alone. We may not be ready to have you all come and take over our kitchen as in the past, but we still love to get your messages, texts and Skype conversations - and snail-mail letters, Anna (thank you, Canada Post)! In that sense nothing has changed, because we still have a deep and abiding interest in all of you, just like with any Kaleo group before you. I just don't get a new crew this year. We are still all about this: "We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me" (Colossians 1:28-29).

So thank you for your prayers, and for staying in touch. I look forward to having the Yearbook in hand soon, so we can remember better what God has done this year in perfecting you in his kingdom. (I hope to get the final draft to the Yearbook Team by early next week, so it shouldn't be too long before it comes to you in the mail). I know that many of you are also finding life difficult right now, which should come as no surprise, but I understand how uncomfortable it can be. May we all live in the grace of God.

Hey Guys

Sorry I haven't been very good at keeping you guys updated on my life, but to be honest its pretty boring right now so there isn't a whole lot exciting to share. I hope everyone's summer is going well so far and I miss all of you guys so much. I'm not really sure why I am even writing this blog, I think I just need to get out some of my thoughts. The last two months haven't been the easiest. Its been kind of a shock to come from an environment where I was surrounded by people all the time to being home and living just with my parents again. My sister has been gone for the last few months doing her nursing practicum and none of my closest friends even live in the Hat anymore so the last few months have been pretty lonely to say the least. Its weird how I remember most of the good times of kaleo and barely remember all the really hard times. I even miss BC and its beautiful scenery, I have even almost forgotten how much I hated all the rain....almost. Anyways I am just really frustrated with life right now. I feel like I'm just stuck waiting for my life to mean something and to serve a purpose. I feel so bogged down by western society and our selfish individualistic ways. Lately, since I have been home, I have felt a really strong desire to help those in need and do something bigger with my life. I'm rethinking everything and I am soo utterly confused right now. In the fall I am enrolled to start my bachelors of science and for so long I just wanted to get a good job so I could be well off and live comfortably and have all the useless materialistic crap that comes along with it... but I don't know any more. I know we are not called to live comfortably but instead radically so others can see the Christ's love. I'm so confused and I don't really know what to do. I don't know if I want to spend all this time going to school to get a good paying job and then spend the rest of my life paying off student loans and just worrying about myself. The thought of not getting a big degree from a university is kind of scary because it has always been the only thing I thought I could do and the means in which I measured a successful life. I know God can use people who make a lot of money and have good jobs but I just don't know what he wants for me. I just really want my life to matter for God's kingdom and I don't know what to do with all these doubts about my future. I know I need to trust God because he knows what is best for me but sitting here in Medicine Hat just surviving the days seems so useless. I try to be a light at work and with customers but people's selfishness and rudeness is frustrating me and making me more jaded towards the people here living in luxury in Canada while people their own country and around the world are struggling everyday to survive. Anyways I think its pretty obvious from my ranting that I really need prayer for guidance, I feel pretty lost. I really want God to use me but I fail so much everyday that I don't even know how he could use someone as weak and scared as me. Anyways if you read this thanks for listening, I guess after two months of not having anyone to talk to about this kind of stuff I just had to get it out.
Love and miss you all
Jocelyne

Proud Dads Can't Help It

This is Danny's latest short film from his Digital Film course in Kona, Hawaii, filmed on a lava field:

its sarah

I am not even sure if many you look at the blog anymore. Even though it happened to me, Kaleo seems like a weird and distant memory, one that sometimes is easier to forget. Lately it has crossed my mind when Nathan Kwon and Ryan Dirk unadded me from facebook why God had put our year together the way he did. So much hurt, so many mistakes(everyone's), so many could haves. I was talking to Sid Koop today and realized that with all the more sin, we as Christians can learn to show all the more grace. That God doesn't necessarily ordain bad things to happen but he lets them. When these bad things happen if our eyes are fixed upon Jesus it will be okay. This is the joy in suffering that we have! I am learning grace finally you guys.

and I saw Bayus today!!!

PS. ERIK I MET YOUR SISTER IN LAW SHE IS AWESOME!

I love you all my brothers and sisters.

How Does Your Garden Grow

So I thought about being all mysterious and such about my life and making you guys seek me out to find out what is going on about my life but then I realized... there is really nothing too mysterious going on, haha.
I have been working a lot in the lovely Millenium garden of Leader, and in a weird cheesy way, it is kind of cool. I have been able to see all these flowers (like the perennials) sprout from nothing from the ground to grow into gigantic and beautiful bushes of flowers. I have definitely learned a few things about patience (flowers do not really grow fast as you can assume, except vines.... they grow really fast). And I have learned a fair bit about plants. Even though, it is a lonely job with only birds, cats, bugs, and the occasional elderly lady coming through. I must say though, I have been blessed with an incredible boss. He isn't a believer but even though he makes some crude jokes he completely understand that I am different and don't have the same values and morals as the rest of the pharmacy staff (weird to explain but yes, a pharmacist is my boss). It has also been great because he is really involved in what is going on on a provincial, local, and global level. He is a real huge philanthropist, so I have had great conversations about that with him (and photography). Lastly, even though I have only worked there two months since he said that this is the best the garden has been in years, I got a mini fridge as a bonus! It is a very decent one too, that is worth over 300 dollars. So all I can say is I am blessed.

I just had my third social justice night, and once again, it went pretty well. Although, I did bawl in front of everyone there because you guys all know how much I love to cry in front of people....not. I guess this stuff really touched me, and my emotions just spilled out. When I was in Vancouver the stuff I saw and heard I registered within me and it pained my heart but I hadn't really ever felt it emotionally, until now. My night was on sex trafficking and for the Van. team I think some of you remember when we saw that woman being beaten by that man when we were driving on Hastings Street, and as I was telling my audience this, I started straight out crying. At least by the time I was done almost all the women in the room were crying too (which made me feel a little better).
Next week I start work at Luseland Bible Camp. I am nervous, excited, and for some reason worried what this camp season will look like. Please be praying for me and for my camp.
Speaking of prayer requests, this may sound so dumb but for the last year or so I have been getting reoccuring pus pockets at the back of my throat and sinus infections, and to be honest, I haven't really been able to sing at all. I went to the doctor and she said it could be slightly serious, so please be praying for me, especially because I usually sing on the worship team at camp.
Love you guys so much! I am praying for you constantly.
Keep praying for freedom,
Lynnea

i lovedy love you all!

hello my favourites.
I always look on the blog and secretly want to post all the time but I never do. Anyway, I figured I might as well give you guys an update if any of you care to know whats been going on with me!

When the average person asks me how I am I tell them simple dumb answers but I'll give you guys the real deal. My relationship with my parents is at the best point its probably ever been. I've been honest with them lately which is huge. Things with my sister rock as usual. Its so nice to be living with her again but also kind of sad cause it feels like these days are coming to the end! She's not engaged yet but she will probably be getting married August of next year. CRAZY.

Hmm so I didn't get accepted to work at my camp this summer which came as a pretty big shock. yes, in the past I haven't always been the best employee but I have been very loyal to the camp and I know most of the full time staff pretty well. It kind of hurt that I wasn't accepted. I like to say I don't really care but in talking to a camp friend tonight I realized how hurt I am. I think this was just another thing I've wrecked for myself. Since coming home I've noticed that a lot of my actions have consequences (lame I know...) but its hitting me that even though I feel I've changed and grown a lot stronger not everyone around me realizes that yet.

I officially accepted my offer to redeemer and I registered for courses on friday! Crazy. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I'm not a fan of commitment but I think redeemer will be good for me. I was in hamilton for the weekend and I met a bunch of sweet people who go there. Community-wise I think it will be wonderful.

Health wise I'm not doing too good. I feel good emotionally but I can't seem to make myself physically healthy. I've lost about 15 pounds since being home and I am starting to look sick... enough that people at work who barely know me ask if I'm okay. Prayer would be much appreciated.

Anyway, I love you all and I wish that canada post didn't suck so bad so I could mail you letters!!

calling on you guys to pray!

Hey family,

As you know, I am off to Buenos Aires next Friday. Here's the thing: my cysts are back. If you want a reminder of what I mean, think of me on our first trip to the chalet at Mount Washington. Yup. That.

I need you guys to pray that it will go away. I am already on antibiotics and trying to stop it before it gets any worse. I am not at the point of needing my Tylenol extra strength every four hours like clockwork yet. If this continues, I have no clue how I'm going to travel for 24 hours...

As well, I still am raising money... and a little concerned.

So yeah, I'm calling on you guys to petition our Father on my behalf.

I love you all and miss you!

Holly

Update

So yah, I thought it would be a good idea to post an update about what is going on in my life right now. To start things off, at Briercrest I am no longer doing TESOL in the fall but am going into Global Studies instead. I went through the interview process for TESOL and after being accepted, I decided to wait a year to think about it. Courses transfer pretty easily between the two programs, so I am quite happy with my decision. I will see whether or not I still want to pursue TESOL after I get a feel for some of the courses and take an Introduction to TESOL course in April. So that is what is going on with school.

I have just arrived at Muskoka Woods today for the summer, and man am I stoked. I got to have a nice chat Olivia Boyda (related to Nate Boyda of K7) who will also be working here this summer. She is going to Briercrest right now, and we discussed people we both know and how we saw each other on stage at Youthquake. Small world, eh? But yah, It is going to be a gong show of a summer this year, hopefully it isn't too tiring.

I hope you guys are all doing well, prayin' for yah :)

SORRY JIM

YO PEEPS! So I finally got my tattoo. I had it done yesterday (THE SABBATH - so holy) at around 5pm. I'm very happy with it and my parents were cool with it too! And Jim, don't worry, you can't even see it when I'm standing normally with my arms at my side :). Also, apologies to my future husband, who may or may not like tatties. SUCKA FOR YOUUUUU!

Anyway, the tattoo says: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come" (Rev 4:8) in ancient Greek. I got Wes to send me a Biblical manuscript from like a bajillion years ago, because I wanted the text as it would have looked like when the earliest Biblical texts were circulating around the world of Paul and John, etc. Wes will probably regret helping me out after seeing this. HAHA.

sometimes there are no words.

Sometimes there are no words. No eloquent phrases to neatly sum up what’s happened.

This season after kaleo has been so dark. Winter. I stumbled through life blindly, half expecting and wishing to wake up in my little messy corner in room 312, still in Kaleo. Where I could feel, and love. Where every word I spoke was not a desperate attempt to warm myself up from the chill of hopelessness. Where dying didn’t seem like a solution. When I thought there was a future. When it was vibrant and full. Now it’s just flat. Lifeless.

“This long dark season

of everything

stripped

to nothing

began so sudden,

overnight,

with the gust of

one phone call,

then never left.

The only miracle here

is waiting

to see

how much night a day

can hold

and still be called

day.”

I’m sitting in the chaos of all my decisions. Each sleepless night I fight in a desperate attempt to claw my way through nightmares, as memories and lies I buried deep during the day awake from their graves.

I’m so tired. Trapped. Seeing life, walking through it, but never touching anything. Not feeling anything. Promises and words wash over me, never sinking in. I’m muddled and slow. Every thought like trying to run through water. Nothing but dry bones. Once full of life, but now stripped bare. Brittle and parched. Forgotten how to walk. I can no longer stand. All my days are blended together. Never wanting to do anything. Wondering if maybe I could just slip out life’s back door.

In the midst of these heavy thoughts, last night, I cried out to the only one who could hear. And I prayed “Lord, I have 3 weeks, okay? Show me there’s a point. Show up, and let me see. Give me something to live for, or else I give up. I don’t want to want to die. But it seems like the only way. So please, please show me another way. Show me so I won’t do this. If what you say is true, there has to be something real, something to live for. Show me you’re true.”

I went to sleep angry and in despair. I woke up late, and almost didn’t go to church. But I dragged myself to New Life in Duncan. I’d almost forgotten about my ultimatum, and was just stuck in my depression.

Pastor Shane began to speak on 2 Corinthians 1. About comfort. I was cynical, and told myself that I wouldn’t let empty words catch my attention again.

But something was different. Shane sat on a stool, and with his voice cracking, told us about how his little girl ‘Jael’ had died. She would have been four years old. He then said “God is not a sentimental God full of empty phrases to keep us going. He is the God of all comfort.” He spoke for a while about what that means, and then read:

“For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.” 2 Cor. 1:8-10.

He talked about times that are so dark, it feels like the death sentence, that there’s no way out. That we want to die. But somehow, somehow in the valley of the shadow of death, Christ’s presence brings comfort. Why? Because we are ‘braving it together’. The God of all comfort is braving the valley with us. He is providing and embedding people in our lives to comfort us and walk with us.

Then he looked over toward where I was sitting and said “He will never leave you, nor forsake you.”

So he answered me. Obviously and quickly. Of course he did. He’s done so much for me, yet still I ask for more. Another sign. And I know he’s going to keep showing more because he is so gracious. He’s not going to stop loving.

But pray that I have eyes to see what he’s doing. Please pray that I have grace to see beyond this moment of winter.

I just get this picture of Narnia, where it’s always winter (but never christmas!). And as they’re walking along, green patches start to show up through the snow that has covered everything for so long. And it begins to melt. You can see the trees, and then there are flowers popping up everywhere, and birds singing! Slowly but surely, it’s becoming spring.

Pray for spring.
